In June 1934, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda to design an exhibition hall for the 1935 World's Fair in Brussels. With its clear formal language and flat roof, it was in the tradition of the 1920s, while its monumental size reflected the Nazi regime's claim to representation in the competition between nations.
